Strada Concept 3 Limited Edition

Speed & comfort of the highest level

Every now and then, we like to do a limited edition bike to show what is possible with our frames. This time, it's the Strada I want to build for myself.

Posted by Gerard Vroomen - 12 March 2020

Maybe I’m biased as the responsible engineer, but I love the Strada. Speed & comfort, minimalist aesthetics, clean drivetrain, what’s not to like.

So when our graphics designer asked if he could do a special graphics package for the Strada, I wasn’t expecting too much to be honest. I thought there was nothing to improve. But as it turns out, I was wrong. The Concept 3 paint scheme is awesome.

In turn, that got me excited to build it up with special parts – but only special parts if they made sense. That meant:

  • SRAM Red AXS eTAP drivetrain. Smooth shifting, no fiddling with cables, lightweight, comfy levers
  • 3T Torno Team crank for lower weight, lower drag and higher bling factor
  • Discus 45|32 LTD SPECIAL EDITION carbon aero wheels with Chris King hubs. The 45|32 rim is specifically designed for the Strada to match the frame aerodynamics
  • Pirelli P-Zero tires, perfectly matching the shape of the Discus 45|32 rim and the Strada frame, with a WAM (Width As Measured) of 30.3mm for the 700x25c nominal size (ideally your tire is slightly narrower than the rim)
  • Matching Fizik saddle & 3T bartape

This limited edition will also give you a sneak peak of our new aero dropbar, the Aeroflux. With a thinner wing profile, multiple internal routing options, a comfortable surface for your hands and grip shapes borrowed from our ever-successful SuperErgo bars, the Aeroflux is the perfect addition to the Strada:

These Concept 3 limited edition bikes are built to order, so if you would like to change something on the spec, just contact us. The full spec list can be found here. And this is how your new Strada Concept 3 could look:

hi Philipp, it’s a while ago but if I remember correctly it was 50 units with the special hubs and everything. They are sold out but if you want your own custom version, we do offer this paint scheme now in any imaginable color combination via our RTP program and Chris King has a lot of different hub colors on offer. Just contact our customer service: https://company.3t.bike/contact-us/

Hey – I just want to say that I have had the Concept 3 for a few months now. Couple of teething problems but my god what a machine. I love it so much now. Can’t count how many times I have heard “mooi fiets”. I started out with an R3 which I loved and still love have cycled that all around Europe. However for me the Strada is next level. Thanks so much for creating this!! Best Mark

Great looking bike, really amazing looks! I am soo undecided whether to order this or the Strada Due Red Axs. The Due has gearing I am familiar with, this one has all the bling I want. And the color! And that crank!

What is your take on using bikes on direct drive trainers ?

And an additional question: what power meter to use? I have quarq on all other bikes but this crank is so awesome I don’t want to change it

My favorite is a pedal based system, measuring power right where it happens (and perfect left-right split). Look & SRM have teamed up to make one, as do Garmin, Favero and as of now, Powertap.

Hi Alex, everything is also compatible with the Strada Due, except obviously the Torno 1x crank. As for direct-drive trainers, no problem.

Final question: Is it delivered tubeless?

Hi Alex, the Discus 45|32 (Due) and the Campagnolo Shamal (EKAR) are both tubeless wheel sets, but we always deliver our bikes with an inner tube. Better for stores when they put a bike on the floor, and also better for customers who may want to change their tires.

My apologies, that is the exception because it comes with the special red tubeless valves to match the whole color scheme.

Gerard, I had the pleasure of meeting you and test riding both road and gravel bikes of yours in Charlotte, NC a few years ago at an industry show. Just read your interview for Peloton. Stay safe and I really appreciate the beautiful design and the elegance of the 1-by drivetrain.

I love 3T designs, but functionality seems not for everyone. I don’t understand how you can say this is a confortable bike. Yes maybe the width tires, but are not suitables for people in search of confort.
Some days ago the great Juan Antonio Flecha, made a video talking about his Strada, and he says that these angles are not suitables for people older than 30 years old , because the Strada tortures you in long routes, specially the seat tube angle.
Has 3T some plans to develop a “endurance” bike in the near future?

    Thanks for your posts !

Hi Oscar, the reason I can say that is because the vast majority of our customers – under and over 30 – say that. It is my own experience as well as that of thousands of our customers. The seat tube angle is very normal, the line between the saddle clamp and the BB is no different than on an endurance bike. That the tube in-between those two points zig-zags a bit doesn’t matter to the final geometry.

By the way, just checking with Juan Antonio, he also doesn’t know what you mean, he isn’t aware of any video where he says he doesn’t think the Strada is comfortable because he thinks it is.

As for us making an “endurance” bike, we already do: The Exploro. Now that all endurance bikes have disc brakes, what is the difference between that and a gravel bike? Tire clearance. They have very similar geometries, stacks, head tube angles, etc, etc, the only difference is that a gravel bike can fit a wider range of tires than an endurance bike.

So I don’t see the need to “dumb down” an Exploro to fit fewer tires than it does now, I think most customers will prefer that it’s a great endurance bike AND it can fit even bigger tires. That’s what we also see in the industry, road bikes are struggling and endurance bikes are struggling even more. Simply because for most people, a gravel bike can do all those things that an endurance bike can do, and more.

    Dear 3T,

congrats for the Concept3 limited edition… it’s VERY intriguing!
I have a couple of questions for you guys:

Question #1: in my case I would opt for a M size. Would it be possible to customise the 3T Torno crank, swapping length (170 mm instead of 172.5 mm) and chainring (42T instead of 46T)? Is there any additional price to be considered for that?

Question #2: 42T is still the smallest chainring size for the Torno crank that can be combined with flat-top chain and road AXS derailleur, right?

Question #3: what is the maximum tire size which is supported on the Strada?

Many thanks for the wonderful products and for being so dedicated in answering one by one to all questions in the blog.

    Cheers and stay healthy!

Hi Stefano, Thanks for your comments. To answer your questions:
#1: OF course we can change the crank length and chainring size. No uncharge for that, we want to make sure it’s right for you.
      #2: Correct, 42T and 46T
#3: WAM (With As Measured) can be 30-32mm. Of course it depends on the rim what tire you choose to get to that measured width. So for example a “25mm” Pirelli P-Zero measures 30.3mm wide on the Discus 45 | 32 LTD wheel set because the internal width of the rim is higher than old-school rims.

        Hi Gerard,

thanks for the super quick reply. One more question: do you ship the bike with spacers, in order to allow some adjustment for the cockpit height?

Have a nice weekend and hang tough over there!

Do the brake cables go through the stem/headset (via the new opening in the handlebar), or is the image not representative in that aspect?

The cable runs parallel to the stem but not through it (that would make setup changes a lot harder)

Ok thanks, couldn’t see the front brake cable here. Have gotten a pretty clean cockpit with shrink-wrap on my Pro with Aeronova, but could be cool with a fully integrated solution with time. In the meanwhile my LBS can rest easy hehe. Great paint scheme by the way!

Hi Gerard! Is there going to be a Pro alloy version available? I’ve had an Ergonova (stock), an Aeronova (upgrade, didn’t work for me) and an Ergosum (current bar, love the shape, but my recently injured back is asking me for a shorter reach bar) during the past few years I’ve had my current bike. The Aeroflux seems like the best of all of them and just what the doctor ordered for me… not to mention it would match my bike beautifully!

Hi Ricardo, no alloy version for these, no. Making good aero shapes in alloy is very tough, and then getting it through our test requirements is even tougher. So we end up with a bar that is not aero enough and too heavy. Thus only carbon for these (the Superergo (https://www.3t.bike/en/products/dropbars/superergo-559.html#/230-dropbars_size-44/216-level-team), which is the successor of the Ergonova/Ergosum range, does come in alloy).
